Its history dates back to 1884, when it began shipbuilding and repair operations as an unincorporated entity. After its nationalization in 1960, GRSE was brought under the fold of the Ministry of Defence and subsequently became a Public Company in 2018. Business Profile With a focus on strengthening India’s defence preparedness, GRSE primarily caters to the shipbuilding requirements of the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard. It has expertise in construction of large, medium and small size ships. The Company delivered the first indigenously-built warship, INS Ajay to the Indian Navy in 1961. It has delivered 105 warships to the Indian Maritime Forces, the highest deliveries by any shipyard in the country, till date. Additionally, 786 platforms have been delivered to various entities under the Central & State Govts. GRSE has had a focus on building in-house capabilities, in the area of design and production. As a pioneer in Indigenous Warship construction programme, GRSE’s product line extends its span from technologically sophisticated Frigates and Corvettes to Fast Patrol Vessels. The Kamorta class Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvettes delivered by GRSE to the Indian Navy became the first Indian Warship with Indigenously-developed warship grade steel, earning the distinction of achieving 90% Indigenous equipment fit. It was a major step towards achieving self-reliance in state- of-the-art warship design and construction. LCUs built by GRSE have the distinction of over 90% indigenous equipment fit as well. GRSE is also the only Defence Shipyard to have diversified into Engineering Business with Pre-fabricated Steel Bridges. It actively participates in global tenders and is also marketing portable steel bridges with neighbouring countries like Bhutan, Myanmar and Nepal.
