INDIA’S TOP 500 COMPANIES 2022 42 Experts’ View How would you summarize NMDC Limited’s journey since its inception? What are some of the key milestones achieved by the company in recent years? NMDC commenced iron ore mining with 4 million tonnes production capacity and in the last financial recorded a historic 42 million tonnes and has expanded its mining footprints globally in countries such as Australia and Mozambique. In this journey, we have explored minerals in the hinterlands of India and developed some of the best-known mines in the country contributing towards mineral security and nation building. NMDC, in recent years, have expanded its production, sales and its financials have crossed several milestones. In FY22, company earned a revenue of ` 25,882 Cr, an increase of 68% Y-o-Y and PAT has also grown 50% to reach the figure of ` 9,398 Cr. NMDChas embarkedona journeyof digital transformation and in 2021, became the first CPSE in India to implement Enterprise Resource Planning on the SAP S/4 HANA platform. Moreover, it is in the process of implementing initiatives like Fleet Management System (FMS), Automatic sampling etc. In setting up the Beneficiation and Pellet Plant at Donimalai; Slurry Pipeline linking Bacheli to Nagarnar; and state- of-the-art Integrated Steel Plant, NMDC has demonstrated its capability and commitment to expand, diversify, and lead the mineral sector of India. What are some of the sustainability initiatives by your company? NMDC’s sustainability approach is socio- environment centric with Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) at the core of its foundational pillars. NMDC is well known for its several initiatives in these areas. Our sustainable initiatives include biodiversity conservation initiatives such as planting over 3.0 million trees and mobilizing resources to improve the soil quality and water table in and around our projects. NMDC conducts annual Carbon Footprint studies to evaluate the Greenhouse Gas emissions from our operations and in the last decade, we have reduced our total per tonne GHG emission intensity by 24%. NMDC has set up Solar Power Projects and commissioned Windmills for renewable power generation, implemented electricity regeneration in our Downhill Conveyor systems and is also working towards ‘Zero-Waste Mining’ by finding ways to productively use various grades of iron ore. Under socio-economic dimension of sustainability, NMDC has been empowering socio-economically disadvantaged students, tribal youth and women, and specially abled children through robust education and skill development initiatives. What is your growth strategy over the next 3-5 years? Our target is to become a 50 MT miner by 2025 and a 100 MT iron ore mining company by 2030. We have a clear roadmap to our goals and the production of 42 million tonnes in the last fiscal has further boosted our spirit. NMDC has made enormous investments in new technology and transformative digitalization. From here on, our growth strategy is to build discipline in the system so that we can collect real-time data and use the insights to make well-informed decisions. In the future, we also plan to leverage our expertise in moving towards a multi- mineral outlook with coal, diamond, gold and other strategic minerals of national interest in our portfolio. The setting up of a Global Exploration Center at Raipur, Chhattisgarh; collaboration with MECL, ISRO and IIT Kharagpur for Joint Mineral exploration activities; our venture into coal with Tokisud North and Rohne Coal Blocks in Jharkhand and forward integration into Steel and Pellet are all valuable steps in creating a diverse mineral profile.
