Their contribution to the economy can be evaluated on several counts. In FY20, PSUs contributed to 53% of the total installed capacity in power generation, 73% of the overall crude oil production and 84% of the aggregate natural gas production in India. Public sector banks have also played a crucial role in financial inclusion, with almost 80% of the overall number of bank accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana having been opened by public sector banks. In case of life insurance sector as well, the public sector continues to hold 66%market share in terms of premium, while in the general insurance segment, the public sector holds a market share of 39%. PSUs are also at the forefront in terms of supporting MSMEs through public procurement, sourcing more than 28% of their total requirements from them.
