India’s Top PSUs 2021 26 Experts’ View How would you describe the journey of your company since its inception? What are some of the key milestones of the company in recent years? In the past 21 years of journey the company has achieved quite a few remarkable feats. We are currently one of the very few debt free profit- making, dividend paying Telecom PSUs. With an exclusive Right of way (ROW) for laying OFC alongside Railway track, we have built a network of 60000+ RKM. We have also set up 18000+ KM City access network, 9200+ point of presence, 1050+ telecom towers, 2 UPTIME USA certified tier III Data Centres, MeitY empaneled RailCloud, Specialized Security Operation Centre to provide a vast array of Telecom and ICT services. Today, RailTel is one of the largest secure Neutral Telecom Services Provider in the country with a network reach to all important towns & cities as well as rural areas. We have also established one of the largest integrated Wi-Fi networks of the world by providing state-of-the- art public Wi-Fi, under the brand name of RailWire, at 6050+ stations. We recently floated our IPO which got massive response from the RailTel Corporation of India Limited investors with our issue being 42.42 x times oversubscribed and listing at a premium. What challenges did your company face during the pandemic? How did you improvise to steer through the crisis? RailTel handles crucial communication system for Railways, several banks, Defence, coal companies and provides home broadband etc hence we had to keep our network and Data centres running. While our administrative team moved to remote working, the field teams handled operations on ground with skeletal workforce. The pandemic also gave an unprecedented thrust to digitalization process of organizations which became an opportunity for us to grow our business. With meticulous planning and paradigm shift in business strategy we achieved our highest ever consolidated income of ` 1411 Crore in FY 21 which is a 21% Y-o-Y growth. Apart from railways, which other sectors is RailTel planning to explore? What services would you provide? RailTel had started as a Telecommunication Company under Ministry of Railways and continued to grow in the telecom business. We diversified into execution of telecom and IT projects. Our emphasis changed to delivering end to end solutions involving telecom services, IT Services, Data Centre Services and project execution. We already offer a bundle of services like Internet Bandwidth, Leased lines, Tower Co- location, HD Video Conferencing service, Data Center services, Cloud services, Security Operation Centre service, NIC e-office, video surveillance system, Wi-Fi services and Content on Demand services etc. to private and Government clients. Apart from Railways, we have a strong foothold in Coal, Defense and Banking sectors where we are a working on growing further. We are also focusing on providing services to Education and Health Sector. To Digitize healthcare, we are providing Hospital Information Management System, mHealth (Mobile health services app), Tele- consultation services etc. Currently we are implementing this project for Indian Railways and Karnataka Government.
