India’s Top PSUs 2021 30 Experts’ View Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) is one of seven coal producing subsidiaries of Maharatna Coal India Limited. Headquartered in Ranchi, Jharkhand, it has forty-two operational mines spread over eight districts in Jharkhand. Since its inception, CCL has been committed to fulfilling the country’s coal demand and ensuring that the wheels of development of Jharkhand and the nation keep rolling. The Company is leaving no stone unturned to fulfil the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of “Atma Nirbhar Bharat”. Mining coal from the bowels of the earth is a challenge. Contrary to the prevalent perception that coal mining is detrimental to the environment, CCL is concentrating on several initiatives to preserve the environment and ensure Inclusive Growth of the stakeholders. Modern mining technology is deployed by the Company to ensure sustainable mining. This ensures productivity, prevents wastage and makes mining operations safe without jeopardizing the share of future generations. Monitoring of bio-reclamation sites by satellites, mine water management, development of eco parks, concurrent mining and reclamation, adoption of surface miners, installation of PM10 analysers reflects the commitment to sustainable mining. The Company has undertaken four First Mile Connectivity (FMC) projects to replace the existing road transport between pitheads and despatch points and shift over to a seamless mechanised coal transport through conveyor belts, which is a covered system for movement of coal reducing the dust pollution. Advantages include lessening the load on road networks, saving on diesel costs, cleaner environment and stoppage of possible pilferage. Safety of the employees is of paramount importance to the Company. Identification of hazards and subsequently its mitigation helps in attaining mine safety. The Company aims to ensure an accident-free workplace. Among all subsidiaries of Coal India Ltd and other undertakings of the Ministry of Coal, Govt. of India, CCL was selected for outstanding contribution in the field of safety and bestowed with the Coal Minister Safety Award 2020.
