Leading SMEs of India 2021
37 Experts' View Leading SMEs of India 2021 How would you describe the journey of your company since its inception? What are the key products and services offered by your company? I embarked on my career as an Electrical & Electronics Engineer, starting as an Exports Manager with Armor Chemicals in 1992 and later as General Manager, International Marketing with Ajanta Pharma Ltd in 1997, wherein I was the youngest lady to serve as a GM. After quitting the job in 1997, I launched Murli Krishna Exports as a pharmaceutical APIs marketing and trading company.. In 2004, I incorporated a new company, Murli Krishna Pharma Pvt Ltd and the plant, a greenfield project, was commissioned in 2005, with an objective to build a regulatory compliant facility that would eliminate the use of carcinogens or as we call it, solvents. However, such a plant needs huge investment, and so, we decided to go ahead with Prefinished Formulation Intermediates (PFI) manufacturing, starting with single molecule. The company received its first EU approval in 2007, followed by an audit the same year. Subsequently, we started producing other products from proton pump inhibitors, pellets and omeprazole pellets to micro-pellets and granules. Murlikrishna Pharma Private Limited Ms. Satya Vadlamani Chairperson & MD We have also created our own eyepiece though we did not file it. Today, we have an approval of 32 products and MKPPL ranks among the best companies in India with specialisation in nanoparticles, nanoencapsulations, oncology, ophthalmology, corticosteroids, COPD, inhalation, proton pump inhibitors, anti-infectors, anti COVID. Because of our nanosuspension technique, our products can be used in different formats like capsules, tablets, sachets, injections or ointments. We are also entering the entering the finished formulation zone i.e. we are making our own final products within the oncology, ophthalmology, and corticosteroids segments. What are some of the innovative initiatives taken by your company in the recent years, and how have they helped your organisation? One of our biggest innovation has been in the field of nano zone. The smaller the particle size, the larger the surface area, and the better the bio availability or the bio equivalency. It ensures better permeability of the drug, less pain to the patient and lower dosage of the drug. Besides, aqueous layered matrix polymers are more biodegradable and easily accepted in the human body. We have developed the nano range (between 700 nm to 1 micron) of brinzolamide to treat glaucoma and are currently conducting studies on it. We also have Platform Technology to make similar drugs by the same technology. Other than this, we also produce iron for oral administration. We have done a liposomal encapsulation of iron, folic acid, B3, B12 and blended it into a cold pressed oil. We are now working on more regularised clinical trial on adults. Hidden hunger due to iron deficiency is a problem not only in India across the world. It is our endeavour to improve the condition of the underprivileged section of the society. What are the key factors that differentiate your company from your peers? Being a smaller and a leaner organisation allows us to be more creative and innovative. Our goal is to benefit the patient and we work towards achieving this goal as a team. It also gives us more freedom and flexibility to undertake clinical research. We may not be as financially as big as our peers but our technical achievements place us in a niche category. We started as a pellets manufacturing company but today we are a truly Novel Drug Delivery Systems (NDDS) company. We make suspensions ranging from the micron level to the nano level, and these suspensions can be layered on with anything as per customer requirement. This gives us an edge above others. When we had started, we were the first with a European approval for a pellet company. Financial gain is not our ultimate goal… our aim is to provide good products; everything else will just follow.
