50 Experts' View Leading SMEs of India 2021 How would you describe the journey of your company since its inception? What are some of the key milestones of the company in recent years? While the HQ has been around since 1996 in USA, Bruce Clay India started operating in late 2009. The initial years were extremely tough as businesses in India didn’t understand the value of organic search. When we approached clients for optimising their websites for higher visibility on Google, they said their web designer was already doing the job. This was a major set-back for us. It was only when Google tightened its algorithm to fight SPAM and introduced major penalties like Google Panda and Google Penguin and many website owners lost their rankings on Google, that’s when our SEO service started getting recognised & since then we have had a very smooth journey. The only other test we faced was during 2020 when Covid impacted the entire economy and the lockdowns forced businesses to shut-down. Covid has been another boon for the Digital Marketing industry as businesses realised the importance of being visible online. Both SMEs and corporates have amped up their Digital Marketing budgets & are looking to partner with high quality Digital Marketing agencies. We have directly benefited from the growth in this sector & have had our biggest year in 2021 & will look forward to set a new record in 2022. The company heritage goes back to 1996 & the company founder Bruce Clay has been called the “Father of SEO" , so naturally we are specialised in Search Engine Optimization (SEO). A lot of people believe they can just hire a couple of resources in SEO & get started in the business. SEO is an extremely specialised niche & requires decades of experience to get it right. We have been blessed with a strong support system provided by US HQ which includes best practices as part of the BCI SEO methodology and regular training sessions for our team. We have also made a significant amount of investment in technology & our proprietary SEO tools provide our teams with a wealth of data. This data is an important part of any SEO project & it enables our teams to provide agile & accurate solutions for our client projects. All these elements have helped us create a significant competitive advantage in the SEO industry. While we specialise in SEO, we offer the entire spectrum of Digital Marketing services including: Google Ads – There is a lot of common ground with SEO such as Keyword research, keyword selection, writing specialised snippets of text for the Search Engines & the users. In fact one of the first infographics our HQ created back in early 2000s had hundreds of thousands of downloads. What is your company’s growth strategy for next 3-5 years? Organic growth via “Word of Mouth” has been our growth strategy since inception. We do exceptional work for our clients & this leads to referrals & new clients. E.g. We did some fantastic work with a leading mobile phone manufacturer on the organic SEO front & collaborated with their HQ as well. They have referred clients to us. Similarly we were doing a fantastic job for a Luxury Hotel Chain pre- Covid, while they had to pause work due to the adverse economic environment, when they were in a position to re-start the services, they have got back in touch with us. As you can see we let our work speak for itself. We focus on training our employees & giving them the best knowledge, tools & resources so that they can deliver client happiness. Apart from this we use “Thought Leadership” in the SEO space in the form of training, webinars, articles etc While most of our growth has been organic we plan to invest in a brand campaign moving forward to further enhance our brand in the Indian market.
