The creation of knowledge supports Dun & Bradstreet’s core purpose
New Delhi, November 17, 2017: Dun & Bradstreet, the world’s leading provider of global business information, knowledge and insights hosted the ‘SME Business Excellence Awards 2017’ at a special award function in New Delhi. The occasion was graced by the presence of Shri. K.P. Krishnan, IAS, Secretary - Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India.
SMEs have contributed immensely to the country’s economic progress and international standing. Dun & Bradstreet SME Business Excellence Awards is known as the most coveted award in the SME industry, where India's leading SMEs in manufacturing and services sectors are recognised and felicitated for exemplary performance in their respective fields.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Manish Sinha, Managing Director – India, Dun & Bradstreet said, “If the Indian SME sector were a man, he would be pretty confused right now! On one hand he should feel pretty good: he accounts for 30% of the GDP and provides employment to 117 million people. The Government has recognised his service to the nation and has launched initiatives like Startup India and Stand Up India to promote his growth.
On the other hand, he’s been neglected for decades. Most of his challenges feel like they have been around forever: limited access to finance, unavailability of infrastructure, unavailability of skilled labour, lack of 24*7 electricity, old technology. Also, compared with his counterparts in comparable countries he looks mediocre at best, awful at worst. At Dun&Bradstreet, we have compared the SME sector in India with a dozen similar countries and the results are quite unflattering.
It is critical to elevate the SME sector’s competitiveness if India has to become a global manufacturing hub, and take Indian SMEs to the next level, both locally and globally. The impact of SMEs can be positive, or negative. For a country with a huge population like India, they can be the nation’s strength. Or they can pose huge challenges, given their unorganized nature and sub scale operations.”
